T1 · 5 line landmarks · 4s · any octave (forgiving)
See a note, find the matching key.
What this skill is
Read a notehead on the treble staff, identify the pitch (letter + octave), and play the matching key fast enough that recall is automatic — not deliberation. Mastery is the foundation for every reading lesson that follows: bass clef, grand staff, intervals, sight-reading.
Common misconception
“Any G is fine when the staff shows G.” That works at T1-T2 (forgiving on-ramp), but T3+ requires the exact octave — reading the staff position means reading where on the staff the note sits, not just the line/space letter. By T3 you must pick G4 (not G2 or G6) within 4.0s.
