Weeks 5-6: reading and touch · technique
Thumb-under preparation
Prepare smooth thumb motion for scales without twisting the hand.
Why this matters
Scales need the thumb to slip under fingers 3 and 4. Without that motion, scales are jerky.
What you should be able to do
Play 12 slow crossing gestures with even tone and stable wrist alignment.
Estimated focus time: 1.5h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. With your right hand on C-D-E-F-G (1-2-3-4-5), play C-D-E. Then while holding E, slide your thumb (1) under to F.
- 2. Play F with the thumb, then G with finger 2.
- 3. The thumb-under should be silent — no audible bump.
- 4. Practice 12 slow crossings.
- 5. Reverse for descending: finger 3 crosses over thumb.
