Weeks 11-12: repertoire and performance · repertoire
Repertoire piece 2
Learn a piece with chordal left hand and independent right hand.
Why this matters
Piece 2 layers in chordal left-hand work — your left hand holds chords while your right plays a melody.
What you should be able to do
Perform a 16-24 bar piece with clean chord changes and recoverable mistakes.
Estimated focus time: 3h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. Pick a piece with right-hand melody + left-hand chord changes (e.g., 'Amazing Grace', 'Greensleeves' arrangement, or a simple jazz lead-sheet).
- 2. Notice the chord changes. Map each chord to a left-hand block (root + 5th, or root-3-5).
- 3. Practice the right-hand melody alone with steady tempo.
- 4. Practice ONLY the chord changes in the left hand at the same tempo.
- 5. Combine. Aim for clean chord-change landings on beat 1 and recoverable mistakes (don't stop).
