Weeks 5-6: reading and touch · reading
Interval reading: 4ths and 5ths
Recognize larger beginner skips by staff and keyboard shape.
Why this matters
4ths and 5ths are the next leap up — they shape major chords (root-3rd-5th).
What you should be able to do
Play 12 mixed 4th and 5th patterns with correct landing notes.
Estimated focus time: 1.5h
How to practice this on your piano today
- 1. From a beginner score, identify 4ths (3 letters apart) and 5ths (4 letters apart).
- 2. Play each on the keyboard — 5ths feel 'open' (most chord roots are built on these).
- 3. Practice C-G, F-C, G-D 5ths from memory.
- 4. Combine with 2nds/3rds: read a phrase mixing all four interval sizes.
- 5. Aim for 15 mixed intervals identified in 30 seconds.
