T1 · 70 bpm · 8 quarters (16 eighths) · 18% tol · forgiving off-beats
Two even taps per click. Feel each beat split in half.
What this skill is
The click plays at the quarter level; you tap eighths— two taps per click. Half land on the click (the “1, 2, 3, 4”), the other half land between (the “and” of each beat). The lesson tests whether you feel the off-beats with the same accuracy as the down-beats.
Common misconception
“If half my taps are on the click, I’m doing it.” That’s 50% — looks ok in aggregate but the audit splits hits per-position. To pass T3 you need ≥80% of on-beats AND ≥70% of off-beats hit. By T5 the two thresholds are equal — you can’t pass by being strong on clicks and weak on “ands.”
How this builds on the prior lessons
Pulse-finding + steady quarters gave you the steady tap. This lesson adds the next layer — splitting each beat into two even halves. The off-beat (“and”) is what later syncopation, swing, and 16th-note grooves all build on.
